Antique US M1860 Presentation Staff & Field Officer's Ames Sword with Scabbard: 100% AuthenticSword has aged over the years and has some signs of rust. Needs to be polished and cleaned (I have not done so myself so I don't damage the item) but original blade engravings are still intact!
The U.S. Model 1860 Staff & Field Officer Sword. This model was worn by officers in the rank of major and above, and by more junior officers filling staff positions. It was designed to replace the heavier and much sturdier Model 1850 Staff & Field Officer Sword. T
he hilt has an ornately decorated "clamshell" folding guard embossed with an American Eagle and Stand of Arms.Federal officers carried the M1860 Staff & Field Officer's Sword during the Civil War and Indian Wars.
Sword has a gilded brass hilt with shield eagle decoration on kidney-shaped counter-guard. There is a hinged guard on the reverse side that is operated with a button and spring and decorated with military shield. Knuckle-bow is decorated with floral motif at center. Top of pommel is floral decorated. Sharkskin grip is wrapped with twisted brass wire. Blade is marked on ricasso “Ames Mfg. Co./Chicopee, Mass.” Blade is ornately decorated and marked “U.S.” Brass drag on scabbard is decorated with eagle and star on reverse. The sword’s scabbard has three rings, so it most likely dates to the early 1870s. Scabbards with two rings are indicative of the Civil War period. Total length: 35 ¼”, Blade length: 28 ¾”
