Description
Rare E. A. Armstrong, Detroit Michigan Gambler's Dagger. This is an amazing late 1800's (1871-1892) coffin handle shaped dagger.
Handle is made with bright red enamel or cloisonne' on German silver with a diamond decoration in the middle. Nice patina to metal.
Double edged spear point blade measures 7", with a total length of 10 3/4".
Blade marked with maker's name " E. A. ARMSTRONG, DETROIT MICH".
The E.A. Armstrong factory produced a variety of edged weapons for the military, fraternal organizations and for general consumer use.
The E.A. Armstrong factory was in operation in Detroit, Michigan from 1871-1892, then moved to Chicago, Illinois until it was bought out by sword manufacturer Henderson in 1894, including all machinery and inventories. After his death in 1899 the firm operated under the name of Ames Sword Company. I have found a few conflicting dates of operation for this company online that they also produced US military swords as late as 1901, but the information I have listed here seems to be the most accurate.
This would have been the perfect gambler's boot dagger to travel out west as it is thin and narrow for easy concealment, but long enough to do the job. This would have been an expensive dagger at the time.
Rare to find a dagger made by this company as they mostly produced swords. This is the only one I have seen in 30 years of collecting and I have had this for around 17-18 years now.
Condition is excellent as shown in pictures.
