Description
Here is a box that we have never seen before, nor can find any references that show it. It is constructed like other mid-19th
century leather cartridges boxes and is lined in a loomed carpet or fleece type material. This indicates that it was probably for metallic cartridges used in one of the early European single shot breech loaders. This likely dates to around 1870.
The box measures 7.5 inches long and about 4 inches square on the sides. It closes with a simple latch tab over a brass stud just like Civil War boxes. This was supported by a fairly narrow belt, no wider than 1.5 inches.
The box is very finely hand stitched throughout, and is in about perfect condition overall.
There are no markings anywhere on the box, inside or out.
