    Description

This complete and intact Type 2 Hagner cartridge box for .45-.70 cartridges in is very good condition.
The box leather is supple with no cracking or crazing, and just minor scuffing.  There is some cracking on the leather tab, which is expected from use.
There is a strong US embossed on the front, and two holes for attachment of a box plate, although there is no evidence that one was ever attached to this box.
One of the rear belt loops is damaged.
All stitching and rivets are strong.
The interior has 16 canvas loops for the cartridges.
Hagner cartridge boxes were originally manufactured with 24 loops for .50-.70 cartridges.  This one was modified at manufacture to hold 16 .45/70 cartridges. See  "The .45-70 Springfield" by Albert Frasca and Robert Hill, page page 275, which shows a photo of the modified Hagner cartridge box.
There is some staining on the interior canvas. There is an implement pouch on one side for the gun tool.
This box was developed by Major P.V. Hagner and was submitted and approved by the Cavalry and Infantry Equipment Boards in 1871 and 1872.
A very nice and solid example of the Hagner cartridge box!
