This is the 4th pattern of the Model 1874 McKeever Cartridge Box.  It does have the metal grommet around the closure strap hole and the staples on the top of the lid (which are usually missing).  The cartridge loops were attached to a canvas backing.  There is the storage compartment for the take-down tool on the right side of the box.  Very Few have survived.  These were first introduced in 1874 and have been used in several different variation up until WWI.
This is a very hard to find Indian War Era cartridge box.  It would makes a welcomed addition to any Collection.
