Description
Wonderful example of the US M1881 officers frock coat! This one is nice in that it has all matching New Hampshire state seal staff buttons, indicating that it could have seen service in the militia or state guard, or state volunteers that were called up during the Spanish American War. As you can see, the front of the uniform has two rows of nine buttons each, which indicates that this uniform would have been worn by a senior level staff officer, such as a Major, Lt. Colonel, or Colonel. The paddle guides and locking key is present on both shoulders, so all you need are a correct pair of epaulettes to complete the uniform. The buttons are SCOVILL MFG CO./WATERBURY. The exact style of this backmark can be found in "American Military Button Makers and Dealers; Their Backmarks and Dates" (Bazelon & McGuinn), as figure 10, 2nd row, which dates this button from 1870 - 1920.
This uniform is small, so if you plan on displaying this on a mannequin, you will want to have an adolescent sized torso. Small, but a scarce uniform to find!
The uniform remains in good condition, showing signs of age, use, and wear. There are a few areas of moth damage, but overall it's a very solid uniform that displays very well. Please see the pictures for more detail.
