Description

Model 1866 French Yataghan Chassepot Sword Bayonet with Scabbard.
The ricasso is marked "M" inside a circle on one side and the reverse has a hot air balloon stamp with an "M" or "W". The crossguard has "H 9425", going up towards the quillon is a "C" with a star over it, another "M" in a circle, and an illegible mark. The spine is marked and dated 1867. The brass guard is solid and shows typical wear. The blade is unsharpened, the tip is a little sharp, and has some minor age spots scattered throughout
. Lock button is functional. The groove has "6D" and "16" in it. No scabbard. Length of the blade measures 22 5/8" (1 1/8" wide x 5/16" thick) and the bayonet overall is 27 1/2".
The muzzle hole is 11/16".
This example was made in September 1867 at the French State Arsenal,
Manufacture Imperiale de Tulle
. The blade bears the commercial trademark of Gustav Felix in Solingen, Germany, indicating that the blade was made under contract and assembled into a bayonet at Tulle.
