K39D, For 45-70 trapdoor, issued in 1870's for experimental trials during the Indian Wars. Designed to aid troops on barren western plains to dig fox holes and trench defenses against attacking Indians, when caught in the open. It was tried in the Civil War with poor results. This version was the last attempt after which a separate tool was adopted for the Spanish American War. Very rare today! In good working order, some patches of patina and some bluing visible, good specimen. Fits 45-70's except carbines and later ramrod bayonet models. All original and complete. Ship weight is 2 pounds.
