Original US Cavalry M1879 Pattern or Merrill’s Modified Curry Comb.

Description

The M1879 Pattern Curry Comb or Merrill’s Modified curry comb. Modified by “re-adopting” the “Y” frame for more strength, the resulting complaints of patent infringement by various manufacturers led to its delay and ultimate demise. Approved in 1879 it was not manufactured until late 1882 then replaced in 1885. A “US” is stamped on the handle.
Only about five thousand were made, making this a somewhat rare addition to any collection.
This curry comb was found at a US Military campsite near Buffalo, WY.
Condition is used with it missing the handle.
I suspect the continued use eventually weakened the handle and they snapped off. It was treated with Gempler’s to stop continued degradation from rust.
