    Description

Old Wooden Ammo Box from Fort Yates, in rough but displayable condition. Not sure if it is for 45/70 or 45 Colt. Originally established in Sioux County, North Dakota as the Standing Rock Cantonment in 1863, the Cantonment was then renamed Fort Yates in 1878 in honor of Captain George Yates who was killed at Custer’s Last Stand.  This ammo box was designed to hold 45/70 or 45 Colt cartridges. It shows signs of early construction using simple rabbeted corners with square headed nails unlike the newer boxes that had finger joints at the corners   It is constructed of 3/4” pine boards. Outer dimensions are; 16 3/4” X 12 7/8” X 7” not including the handles. Inner dimensions are 15 1/8” X 11 1/4” X 6 1/4”. There are still some legible markings on it. The side is marked “March 18??” while one end is marked under the handle “Cartridges”.  These markings show better in real light then in photos although they are still very indistinct. With proper light cleaning they may show better along with any other markings that are under the dirt and grime of 125+ years.
